Unfortunately the streets of Seoul didn't have any name for a long time. People navigated through the city by area-maps, area-names or big eye-catching buildings. That's why street maps still don't have street names on it, so it's quite hard for tourists to get an orientation where they are. Meanwhile the city counsil attached a name to each street, but still the people of Seoul don't use those street names, because they are not used to it ^_^

Leider wurden in Seoul lange Zeit keine Namen für die Straßen benutzt. Die Orientierung erfolgte anhand von Karten der Umgebung, Gebietsnamen oder größeren auffälligen Häusern. Demzufolge gibt es auf den Straßenkarten keine Namen, was vor allem für Touristen die Orientierung sehr schwierig macht. Inzwischen hat die Stadtverwaltung zwar jeder Straße einen Namen zugeordnet, doch werden diese Namen von der Bevölkerung konsequent ignoriert und nicht benutzt, da diese an Straßennamen schlicht und einfach nicht gewöhnt sind ^_^

The traffic lights count down the remaining seconds while the lights are green. This idea is very helpfull for pedestrians. They always know how much time is left to cross the street. You should hurry up if time is running out, because Seouls car driver are very aggressive!

Die Ampeln zählen in der Grünphase die Sekunden wie bei einem Count-Down herunter, so dass der Fußgänger genau weiß, wie lange er zur Überquerung der Straße noch Zeit hat. Sobald die Grünphase dem Ende zugeht sollte man sich beeilen, denn Seouls Autofahrer sind sehr aggressiv!

While main streets are broad and multilane (look at the top picture in this row), the sidestreets are quite narrow. Nevertheless the cars are allowed to drive through those narrow streets in both directions so that it results in a traffic bottleneck many times when two cars meet.

Während die Hauptstraßen sehr breit und mehrspurig sind (siehe erstes Bild oben), sind die zahlreichen Nebenstraßen eher schmal. Da sie dennoch in beide Richtungen befahren werden dürfen, führt das bei der Begegnung zweier PKW's oftmals zu Engpässen.

Next to each public trashcan you see a special net which is made for collecting the recyclable trash, e.g. plastic wrappings and cans. If you take a closer look to the picture, you'll see that this is working very well! The inhabitants of Seoul take care of their city. In Berlin the public waste separation is working not so well...

An jedem öffentlichen Abfalleimer befindet sich ein Netz, das für den wiederverwertbaren Müll gedacht ist, also für Plastik und Dosen etc. Wenn man sich das Bild genau betrachtet, erkennt man sogar, dass das ausnahmslos gut funktioniert. Die Einwohner von Seoul gehen sehr ordentlich mit ihrer Stadt um. Davon kann Berlin leider nur träumen...

Because of 10 million inhabitants live in Seoul, there is a need for special arrangements to controll this huge mass of people. For example there are direction arrows at the zebra crossings. If it's not so busy in the street, people don't care about these arrows, of course.

Da Seoul mit 10 MIllionen Einwohnern sehr dicht bevölkert ist, müssen Maßnahmen getroffen werden, um diese Menschenmassen zu koordinieren. So finden sich an allen Ecken und Enden Richtungspfeile, die vorgeben, wer wo wie zu laufen hat. Sogar die Zebrastreifen sind mit diesen Pfeilen versehen. Ist wenig in den Straßen los, so halten sich die Fußgänger natürlich nicht an die vorgegebene Laufrichtung.

The yellow markings on the pavement give a good signal to blind people where the pavement ends and where the street begins. You can find such markings in the whole city.

Die gelben Markierungen auf dem Boden geben Hinweise für blinde Personen. Mit ihrem Taststock können sie erspüren, wo der Gehweg aufhört und die Straße beginnt. Das ist in Seoul sehr vorbildlich gelöst und stellt eine gute Unterstützung für behinderte Menschen dar.

"Temporary pavement" - I found this funny label at a pavement construction site - Never ever in my life I saw such a cute funny description made by construction workers! It looked to me like a comic, for example Mickey Mouse, where things in the city have names. Lovely ^___^

"Temporary pavement" - "Vorläufiger Gehweg" Diese lustige Beschriftung stand auf einem notdürftig geteertem Stück Asphalt an einer Gehweg-Baustelle. Ich habe noch nie in meinem Leben gesehen, dass Bauarbeiter ihre Baustelle so süß beschriften - einfach nur wunderbar ^___^

As soon as there is any gap or cleft in the pavement, construction workers come and repair the problem to get the sidewalk safe again.

Sobald es auch nur den kleinsten Riss oder eine lose Platte im Gehsteig gibt, kommen Arbeiter und kümmern sich darum, dass der Weg wieder sicher ist.

People of Seoul love their city! For example you can see it here on such rainwater run-offs, decorated with small cute motives like the butterflies on this photo.

Wie lieblich die Bewohner von Seoul mit ihrer Stadt umgehen erkennt man beispielsweise daran, dass sich auf zahlreichen Regenabflussgittern kleine hübsche Motive befinden, wie hier die Schmetterlinge auf diesem Bild.

At construction sites in Seoul you find such a display which shows the current loudness of the site. The aim ist to keep the noise at construction sites as low as possible. During my stay in Seoul I've never seen any noisy construction site, they were all quite quiet. Most noise was caused by the traffic in the streets. But even the cars of Seoul drive very calm, compared to Berlin!

An Baustellen hängen Displays, die den verursachten Lärm per Dezibel-Anzeige darstellen. Das Ziel ist es, dass die Baustellen so leise wie möglich arbeiten sollen. Ich selbst habe nie eine laute Baustelle erlebt. Der meiste Lärm kam von den Autos im Straßenverkehr, wobei sogar diese eher ruhig fuhren, verglichen mit Berlin.

Every detail of the appearance of the street looks like a small artwork. Here you see the golden fire hydrant adaptors at the outside wall of an office building at Teheranro street. The picture below shows a public street hydrant, which looks very unique.

Jedes Detail im öffentlichen Straßenbild erscheint wie ein kleines Kunstwerk. Hier sieht man beispielsweise die goldenen Anschlüsse für Wasser an einem Bürohochhaus, welche die Feuerwehr im Falle eines Brandes nutzen kann. Auf dem unteren Bild wird ein Straßenhydrant gezeigt, der für sich alleine schon sehr hübsch aussieht.

Many street lights, street columns or junction boxes are covered with this strange plastic material. Maybe it is some kind of isolation stuff. Maybe it should shield pedestrians from electricity dangers. But then the covering should be at all street lights and columns, which was not the case. I couldn't find out what it ist. Maybe someone who is reading this text can tell me the secret meaning of this material?

Viele Straßenlaternen, Straßenpfosten und elektronische Verteilerkästen (siehe unteres Bild) sind von dieser seltsamen Ummantelung umgeben. Vermutlich handelt es sich dabei um Isolationsmaterial, da viele elektrische kabel noch immer oberirdisch verlegt sind. Dann aber müsste sich dieses Material an allen Pfosten befinden, was wiederum nicht der Fall ist. Ich konnte dieses Rätsel leider nicht lösen. Vielleicht weiß ein Besucher dieser Homepage die Antwort?

In Seoul it was decided by law that each new office building has to have some public artwork in front of the building. That's why you can find many modern artworks in the streets. Sometimes interesting and funny (see the photo below), sometimes boring and strange (look at the picture above).

In Seoul gibt es ein Gesetz, das besagt, dass jedes neugebaute Bürohaus ein Kunstwerk auf die Straße stellen muss. Dementsprechend viele Kunstwerke findet man in der Stadt. Teilweise interessant und lustig (siehe unteres Bild), teilweise langweilig (siehe oberes Bild).

The letter boxes at the building entrances have two big round holes to see the incoming letters. If you turn your face upside down you'll see that there is a monster with a big open mouth and two scary eyes waiting for the letters to eat °_° By the way: The entrances to the buildings and to the apartments inside are no longer be opened by a key like in old fashioned Berlin, no, they are being opend by a number-combination and a keypad.

Die Briefkästen in den Hauseingängen haben zwei Löcher, durch die man die eingegangene Post erkennen kann. Dreht man sich auf den Kopf, so sieht man ein Monster mit offenem Mund, das gierig auf neue Post wartet °_° Die Haustüren zu den Wohnungen werden übrigens nicht mehr per Schlüssel geöffnet, sondern per Zahlenkombination!
